(CARY, NC) -- Two SAS customers are being honored for analytics in public safety. One involves fingerprints. The other, footprints. Both use SAS Analytics, and both are deemed visionary applications of information technology that benefit society. North Carolina Criminal Justice Law Enforcement Automated Data Services (CJLEADS) and Duke University’s Sustainability Office were both named 2011 Computerworld Honors Laureates.

CJLEADS is the only statewide system nationwide to integrate data from so many criminal justice organizations – including court, warrant, probation, parole and local jail information. With 4,000 users on its way to 33,000, CJLEADS provides a rounded profile of offenders and a single information source agencies can access securely via the Web.

The North Carolina Office of the State Controller established the system after two high-profile murders in 2008. The suspects were repeat offenders whom the courts overlooked multiple times while on probation. An investigation found no central information system for law enforcement officials and no efficient way of knowing when offenders on probation were charged with additional crimes.

CJLEADS is already working. The North Carolina Department of Insurance Criminal Investigations Division recently identified, located, and arrested members of one of the state’s largest staged accident rings, saving countless work hours in the process. CJLEADS information found 11 of 16 culprits in three counties and three more already in prison.

Duke University’s Sustainability Office, also a 2011 Laureate, is a development partner for SAS’ hosted solution for sustainability. Once the solution is fully deployed, Duke will use it in areas such as sustainability performance reporting and predictive modeling of greenhouse gas emissions.

With the hosted SAS solution for sustainability, higher education institutions can manage and forecast resources needed to achieve desired outcomes across the enterprise and within departments. They can prioritize institutional strategies and align funding for innovation, environmental program development, and faculty and students accordingly. The solution also helps to ensure transparency with institutional constituents and organizations such as the American College and University Presidents’ Climate Commitment.

The Computerworld Honors awards will be presented at the Annual Laureates Medal Ceremony and Gala Awards on June 20 at the Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium in Washington, D.C.
