ATLANTA -- The speculation surrounding Mercedes-Benz could be over soon. Very soon. Media outlets in Georgia are reporting that Mercedes-Benz is moving its American headquarters to metro Atlanta.

The automaker could bring about 1,000 new jobs to the Atlanta region, according to sources working on the deal.

A site for the headquarters building has not been released.

The decision comes after months of speculation that the company could relocate to either Georgia or North Carolina. Possible sites in North Carolina included Charlotte or the Triangle.

Mercedes-Benz USA is currently located in New Jersey where lawmakers have offered substantial incentives to keep Mercedes-Benz from moving.

The official announcement is expected to come Tuesday.

While North Carolina was being speculated as a possible site, currently the state’s incentives pool was in limbo and it would have required the legislature to hold a special session if action was needed as quickly as the automaker had reportedly wanted. There are reports Georgia was offering upwards of $40 million in incentives to entice Mercedes.

This won’t be the first time the Tar Heel State will have lost out on a bid to entice the German automaker.  Just over 20 years ago, the Alamance County town of Mebane was on the short list for a Mercedes manufacturing plant but lost out to Alabama.
