(CONCORD) -- North Carolina Motor Speedway in Rockingham has not hosted a NASCAR Nextel Cup race since 2004. Speedway Motorsports, Inc. owns the 42-year-old track. "We're looking at an auction and we're looking at a time period sometime this fall, perhaps September," said Jerry Gappens, a spokesman for SMI.

It comes down to money. The track is not profitable for SMI. "With the limitations of not having a marquee NASCAR event there, that really limits what you can do from a racing standpoint."

Since 2004, the track has been used for race car testing, special events and the set for movies and commercials. "We've decided to make it available to somebody that might have a vision for its use and free it up and let somebody utilize it in a better way than it is being utilized now."

SMI owns seven other tracks, including Texas Motor Speedway, the track that too the last Cup race from North Carolina Motor Speedway.
