NASCAR Gets Serious With Penalties PDF Print E-mail

Jeff Gordon At Infineon(DAYTONA BEACH, FL) -- Hendrick Motorsports' Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson have been docked 100 points each in the Nextel Cup Points. Their crew chiefs were both fined $100,000, suspended for six races and put on probation for the remainder of this season.

A NASCAR inspection on Friday found that the fenders on both the 24 and 48 cars did not meet NASCAR rules. "Reaction to violations to the Car of Tomorrow violations are more severe. We are going to keep this car in check," said NASCAR Managing Director of Communications, Ramsey Poston. Unlike the old car where small tweaks could be made on some parts of the car, there are no gray areas on parameters for the COT. "Every is certified," said Poston.

Jeff Gordon remains the Nextel Cup points leader, even after the penalty points deduction.
