(UPDATE) -- Hendrick Motorsports will move forward without a deal to bring the famous number eight with Dale Earnhardt Jr. next season. HMS said they could not reach terms that made sense. This comes after Earnhardt put more distance between himself and the Chase on Sunday. Engine trouble sent him to the back of the pack and down another slot to 14th in the point standings. "Yeah, we ended up having an issue with the motor that was probably due to hard downshifts during practice," said Earnhardt. "This thing this week was too rough on it." He was referring to the road course at Watkins Glen.

Earnhardt knows he has put himself in quite a hole. "We're gonna have our work cut out for us. This engine trouble here is gonna to make it much more difficult than what we were looking at last week." With four races remaining in the race to the Chase, He is not giving up being able to make a run for the championship. "We're gonna keep tryin'. We gotta keep tryin'. If we don't try, we'll be pretty damn ashamed of ourselves, so we gotta keep workin'."
