(UPDATE) -- The final opportunity for fans to see the red number 8 race for a championship, with Dale Earnhardt Jr. behind the wheel, went up in smoke last Sunday. He suffered his fifth engine failure of the season. Earnhardt wanted to give his team a chance at a championship before the move to Hendrick Motorsports next season, but that is not going to happen. "They worked hard and to just blow up at the end, it's real, real hard on them guys personally because they put so much into it," said Earnhardt. He is frustrated for his fans, too. "We ain't in the Chase, we deserve to be in the Chase. I wish we were for my fans."

There is no NASCAR rule preventing him from winning a race during the final 10. Can he win during the Chase? "Absolutely! I mean, I run good every week. I just ain't finishin' races. We run in the top-five every week." He plans to give his fans something to cheer about during the Chase.
