(FONTANA, CA) -- Early Monday morning, NASCAR officials finally gave up on trying to overcome the effects of pouring rain in California and postponed the Auto Club 500. A slick track led to wrecks. The most severe involved Casey Mears. "I almost had it saved and then coming back across the track I got hit and I didn't realize who that was until I saw the replay there in the medical center and obviously that was Jr's," said Mears.
Yes, Mears impacted with teammate Dale Earnhardt Jr. Earnhardt later said the track was not ready and they should not have been out there racing. This wreck was not over for Mears. He was coming to a stop against the wall when Sam Hornish Jr., having just hit Reed sorenson, rear ended Mears and flipped Mears' car. "The pedal went to the floor and I couldn't steer it anymore, so I figured I was along for the ride then and then when I got into the back of the five car, the fire was about the only thing that caught my attention," said Hornish. NASCAR will restart the race Monday afternoon at 1:00 with Jimmie Johnson having the lead on lap 88.
