(DARLINGTON, SC) -- Tony Stewart is still hot about the Goodyear tires used in Sunday's Kobalt Tools 500. He said they were not worthy for use on a street car. "This was pathetic," said Stewart.
Some other drivers were testing Goodyear tires at the resurfaced Darlington Raceway on Monday. Jeff Gordon said tires were a problem on Sunday, but Stewart did not handle the issue in a constructive way. "I think he went a little overboard. I talked with Tony a little before the race. I could tell he was a pretty wound up about it," said Gordon. Ryan Newman said Stewart communicated the concerns held by many drivers after Sunday's race, but he did it in true "Tony" fashion. "Obviously he took it to another level, but that's Tony. Everybody is different. I'm not going to stand here and bad mouth Tony because I don't think a lot of the things that Tony said was false," said Newman. Goodyear went on the defense Monday. In a statement they said they put a tire on the track based on the very best data available from several tests conducted at Atlanta Motor Speedway last year. Goodyear did indicate that they would retest tires at Atlanta Motor Speedway before the fall race there. The tire company also took issue with the fact that Stewart indicated that the reason Goodyear no longer participates in other racing series is because they do not have people smart enough to design a good tire. Goodyear said in a statement that the reason the company is no longer involved in other racing series is merely a company decision based on the cost.
