The Charm And Alarm of Martinsville PDF Print E-mail

Image(MARTINSVILLE, VA) -- This weekend, the NASCAR Spring Cup Series heads to Martinsville Speedway. It is NASCAR's oldest and arguably most unique track. This year marks the venue's 61st year. "Nothing has changed on the track itself, shapewise, sizewise, or anything like that from the very first day that it opened back in 1947," said Martinsville Speedway President, Clay Campbell.

Long straight-aways, tight turns and minimal banking make drivers have to really earn they pay. "Drivers either love it, or they hate it. It makes for a long day. It's mentally demanding and physically demanding."

There's only one thing that trumps the racing at Martinsville, that's the hot dogs. The dogs are just something that evolved from the time Campbell's grandfather started the track years ago. "At that time we made a hot dog and just didn't put a wiener on a bun and that's all you got. You got the whole works."

Drivers will get the whole works on the brutal short track in Sunday's Goody's Cool Orange 500.
