(DARLINGTON, S.C.) -- The reconstruction of Darlington Raceway is complete. The track was christened Wednesday by a NASCAR legend.
David Pearson finished his career in second place behind Richard Petty on NASCAR'S all-time wins list. The Silver Fox gave the track a test as he drove a restored version of the Wood Brothers' Number 21 Purolator Mercury from 1971. "I looks all together different," said Pearson when asked about the refurbished track fondly referred to as the track that's "Too Tough To Tame." Pearson led the way with Carl Edward behind on the Darlington track as the two took part in a sprint race. Pearson won. He said you can still drive the track in much the same way he did years ago. "Cause they ain't changed the rack track as far as the outside part of it. Everything that was done was done on the inside of it." Driver of the number 99, Carl Edwards said the new Darlington surface creates some questions. "I just really don't know what to expect with the new pavement. I think it's going to be a deal where we all unload for practice and we'll probably come a lot like we ran before here. We'll lean on our notes from our testing a little bit," said Edwards.
