(RALEIGH) -- A new coalition is calling for restructuring the state’s revenue system as a new report shows revenue in North Carolina is dropping dramatically. The Office of the State Controller reports tax revenue in January alone dropped over 14 percent.
A new group called “TogetherNC” claims that could be avoided by completely rewriting the tax laws. Elaine Mejia with one of the organizations in that coalition, The Justice Center, says the budget hole could grow to over $4 billion next year. Mejia says just eliminating some credits and loopholes could save billions of dollars. She says the state should also tax services and online purchases to reflect the new economy. |
