Hagan Talks Health Care PDF Print E-mail
Written by Bruce Ferrell

(WASHINGTON, DC) -- North Carolina Senator Kay Hagan spoke on the Senate floor Thursday. She was part of a coalition of Senators who talked about how women in particular, need health care reform. She said that women are discriminated against when it comes to health care coverage.

She said in all but 12-states insurance companies are allowed to charge women more than they do men. She gave an example that affected her family. She said her daughter Carrie recently had to purchase health insurance, and for no other reason than her gender, her daughter's insurance cost more than her son Tilden's.

She said she also had a female staffer search for the most affordable health insurance she could find. She found basic insurance for 235-dollars a month. That same plan would cost a man 88-dollars a month. Hagan said even women who have health insurance have problems because many plans don't cover preventive care like mamograms and PAP smears or the co-pay for those services is extremely high.
