(MORRISVILLE) -- Thirteen Triangle-area members of a missionary group stationed in Haiti when the earthquake hit arrived back home at Raleigh-Durham International Airport Friday night, bringing with them first-hand accounts of the horror and desolation of the aftermath of the massive destruction.
One of the members of Mission To Haiti, senior citizen Helen Little said many of the survivors feel hopeless. Little said their interpreter told them as they were leaving to board a plane that he and his family will most certainly starve to death. Massive relief efforts underway now hope to prove him wrong. Another member of the mission To Haiti, Joan Greggs, said after the initial quake their compound became a local hospital and they all became nurses. Greggs says her group finally wound up waiting at the airport for thirteen hours before they were located and put aboard a military transport plane for the states. Little says death and destruction is everywhere--but she hopes to return in March to check on the child she sponsors, and to continue her missionary work. |
