(RALEIGH) -- Democrats in the North Carolina House are criticizing a proposal that would eliminate the cap on charter schools.  Senate lawmakers recently approved a Republican-backed measure that would do away with the current limit of 100 charter schools and expand policy-making powers for an independent charter commission.

Rep. Rick Glazier said the proposed changes in charter oversight would hurt traditional public schools. "It allows charter schools to operate largely outside the purview of the State Board of Education in a fundamentally unconstitutional way," said Glazier.

The bill would also remove restrictions on enrollment growth. Currently, charter schools can only grow by 10 percent each year.
