(GREENSBORO) -- Many North Carolinians are wondering what they can do to help the people of Japan following last week's earthquake and tsunami. Red Cross regional executive director Bill Brent said right now the best way to help is by donating to a reputable charity.

Brent also said the public can donate through the Red Cross. "The can do that through our web site at RedCross.org.  The can text 90999 and just simply type in Red Cross or they can call the American Red Cross at 1-800-RED-CROSS or go into any chapter throughout the country," said Brent.

He said that the Red Cross has sent a disaster expert to Japan to help determine the needs of the Japanese Red Cross. However he said the Japanese Chapter of the Red Cross is one of the best equipped in the world.
