(RALEIGH) -- In light of the illegal campaign payments that Peter Reichard is accused of funneling into Gov. Beverly Perdue's 2008 campaign, State Democratic Party Chairman David Parker said he supports overhauling current laws which he said allow businesses, unions and others to hide political contributions.

"Immediate reporting of all campaign expenditures, whether they are direct or indirect, would cure a lot of the ills that we as citizens all feels a little queasy about.  We just wonder," said Parker.

Reichard is accused of funneling $32,000 in under-the-table payments from a wealthy Perdue donor through a private company he controlled to pad the salary of a full-time campaign fundraiser. Reichard is expected to appear in court on Wednesday and plead guilty.

Parker contends that Reichard didn't do anything that conservative businessman Art Pope has done legally using what he called "Byzantine laws" and careful guidance from talented attorneys. Parker stressed that schemes set up by Pope are totally legal and very similar to what Reichard is accused of doing.
