(WASHINGTON, D.C.) -- There is a growing frustration among the American people over members of Congress not being able to agree on a payroll tax cut extension and an extension to long-term jobless benefits.  North Carolina Republican Rep. Renee Ellmers said it seems to her that everyone does not have Americans' best interests at heart.

"We are the ones voted for the year extension.  That's what everyone is saying they want.  We're already there.  We voted for it. We passed it on to the Senate," said Ellmers. "All of those Democrats that are the ones who are saying we're against a year payroll tax holiday are the ones who voted no."

The Senate passed a two-month extension, but the House refused it with House leadership saying they wanted a 12-month extension. Senate lawmakers have left Washington for the holidays and House leaders want all members of Congress back in Washington to deal with the issue before the tax cut expires at the end of the year.

Ellmers, who is a member of the committee that is now responsible for working out a compromise between the House and Senate, said the process could move quickly if Senators would just come back to Washington.
