(RALEIGH) -- American Red Cross volunteers responded on Christmas morning to an apartment fire in Raleigh. The blaze broke out before 2:30 AM at Green Castle Apartments on New Hope Church Road.

“We’re deeply saddened for those who lost everything in this fire which is especially difficult on Christmas Day,” said Barry Porter, Red Cross Regional Executive. "We are so grateful to our Red Cross volunteers ... who respond to the scene of a local disaster when called upon at any time of the day or night.”

The team of Red Cross volunteers helped coordinate assistance in the form of food, shelter, and emotional support to 32 individuals due to fire damage to the ten unit building.

Porter said the Red Cross would provide several thousand dollars that will go toward food and clothing to many of the displaced victims over next couple of days.

The News & Observer of Raleigh reports that no one was in injured in the fire, which started outside a second-floor apartment. Investigators have not yet determined the exact cause of the fire.

Through November, the Red Cross Raleigh Region has provided fire assistance to 1,440 individuals since July of 2011.
