(RALEIGH) -- Gov. Bev Perdue announced on Tuesday that she will propose a temporary three-quarters of a percent sale increase in her budget proposal for next year.  She said the aim is to restore of the the cuts made by the Republican-led General Assembly to education.

The Governor realizes she may be in for a fight.  "I'll fight any battle that I need to fight for the future of this state and that's an investment in our children," said Perdue.

But former Charlotte Mayor Pat McCrory, who ran against Perdue in 2008 and has plans to run against her again, said Perdue is breaking a promise she made in 2008.

"She said raising taxes during this recession would be the worst thing we could do for this state and for our economy and, of course, soon after getting elected she raised your corporate tax, your income tax and our sales tax," said McCrory. "After doing the sales tax a reporter asked her well how can we trust you that this would only be a temporary sales tax and she said you can trust me because I'm the Governor."

"This is a discussion I want to have the citizens of our state to once again implement the three-quarters of a cent sale tax for education, 100 percent," said Perdue.

McCrory said the state's current education system is not working and more money is not going to fix the problem. "It's just assuming if we pour more money into the current system things will get better. I think we need to change the existing system of our education before we put more money into it."
