(GREENSBORO) -- The defense and prosecution each have two hours for closing arguments Thursday after the defense rested its case in the John Edwards trial on Wednesday. Following closing arguments, instructions from the judge to the jury are expected to be lengthy.

Attorneys for the disgraced former Democratic presidential candidate did not call Edwards, his oldest daughter Cate, or his former mistress Rielle Hunter as testimony wrapped up in a federal courtroom in Greensboro.

Edwards faces six counts of campaign finance violations. If convicted on all counts, he could face 30 years in prison.

The crux of the prosecution's case is that the former North Carolina senator and vice presidential nominee failed to report nearly $1 million in campaign contributions received from two wealth donors.  Prosecutors say the money amounted to campaign donations because Edwards sought and used the money in an effort to preserve his presidential run, which could have been torpedoed by revelations of his affair with campaign videographer Rielle Hunter. Hunter subsequently gave birth to Edwards' daughter Quinn, whom he originally claimed was not his child.

Defense attorneys counter that the money was simply a gift from two friends to another friend and that Edwards' goal was to prevent his late wife, Elizabeth, from finding out about his affair.

The jury will like begin deliberations on Friday.
