(RALEIGH) -- Those traveling to North Carolina's coast for the Memorial Day weekend should keep a close eye on forecasts for a low pressure system currently off the coast of Florida.

The National Hurricane Center is putting it at about a 70 percent chance that this low pressure system could develop into a tropical cyclone as soon as Saturday," said North Carolina News Network meteorologist Aime Wilmoth.  "Now, it doesn't look like it's going to make landfall on the North Carolina coast, but it could bring some rain over the weekend."

Wilmoth also cautions beach goers in the Tar Heel State to be mindful of possible rough surf and rip currents.
