(RALEIGH) -- Lower temperatures are headed to North Carolina, bringing with them the possibility of severe storms.

"We do have a good chance of showers and thunderstorms which should help make things a little more comfortable, but a few storms could be severe, so we're looking for the threat of damaging wind gusts over 60 miles an hour and possibly some large hail," said Gail Hartfield of the National Weather Service office in Raleigh.

On Sunday, the Triangle region of the state set a record when temperatures reached 100 degrees or more for the sixth straight day. That marked the first such streak since the weather service began keeping records in 1944 and broke the record set in July of last year. The high of 106 set the all-time record, which is one degree higher than the record of 105 tied June 29 and tied again June 30 of this year.
