(RALEIGH) -- The unwelcome return of triple digit heat is prompting warnings across the state. Temperatures will be challenging records again Friday with highs at 100 degrees, and the heat index around 105 to 109 degrees.

National Weather Service Meteorologist Ryan Ellis said there may be a little relief in the mountains or at the beach. "I think we're going to see a few degrees cool down overall, I mean, relatively considering where we've been lower to mid-90s doesn't seem so bad," said Ellis.

A cold front will stall in Eastern North Carolina on Sunday and trim temperatures to the low 90s for highs.
