State Reform Tax Code Under Debate

(RALEIGH-) --The idea of reforming the state's tax code has been discussed in the halls of the legislature for some time. Dana Cope with the State Employees Association of North Carolina says some are satisfied with the status quo while others are not.

 

 

Cope's concern is "How are we going to make it 'fair' and what does the term 'fair' mean. It means different things to different people. While it is true that some people under this system are paying lower taxes, that may not necessarily be fair."

Discussions have included "broadening the base," and adding to waht is taxes, such as services, but others say any change should not increase the overall tax burden.
