(CHAPEL HILL) -- UNC Chancellor  Holden Thorp will resign effective in June 2013. Thorp announced his resignation Monday after two years of scandals surrounding the athletics, academics and fundraising.

Members of the Board of Governors have written a resolution asking Thorp to reconsider his decision. "I feel sorry that I wasn't able to change my mind for them," said Thorp. "There's no way I could have imagined some of the things that I've gone through the last two years. "I will always do what is best for this University. This wasn’t an easy decision personally. But when I thought about the University and how important it’s been to me, to North Carolinians and to hundreds of thousands of alumni, my answer became clear."

Thorp has told UNC System President Tom Ross that he is willing to stay beyond June 30, if needed, to avoid any gap in leadership until a successor can be in place.

"Chancellor Thorp’s love of and devotion to UNC-Chapel Hill are beyond question,” said Ross. “I have accepted his announcement with considerable sadness, but fully understand he is acting in what he believes to be the best interests of UNC-Chapel Hill and the entire University."

After stepping down as Chancellor, Thorp will remain as a faculty member of the university.
