(RALEIGH) -- The presidential race has been hard fought in North Carolina, and a new poll shows it might be the closest contest in the country. A survey from Public Policy Polling finds that President Obama and Mitt Romney are tied at 48-percent each.

Tom Jensen said it appears the race between Obama and Romney is only getting tighter in North Carolina. "We did three North Carolina polls over the course of September," said Jensen.  "Two of them the candidates were dead even, the third Obama was up by just one point, so North Carolina right now is looking like the closest state in the country in the presidential race."

Missouri was the closest state in the 2008 presidential campaign, with North Carolina coming in second. President Obama won in the Tar Heel State in 2008 by just 14,000 votes.
