(RALEIGH) -- The new person in charge of the Raleigh police department is settling into her new job -- Cassandra Deck-Brown was promoted Friday from interim chief.

She says she knows people are concerned now about issues surrounding school violence in light of  the shootings at the elementary school in Connecticut last year.

"I look at more than just deciding you want a guard at the school;. I think you need to look at where school violence has evolved. It is a mental health issue. "

Deck-Brown says she wants to enhance efforts in areas such as community policing.
