Acting State Capitol Police Chief And Sergeant Dismissed

RALEIGH, (WPTF) - The acting chief of the State Capitol Police and a sergeant have been fired. Public Safety Secretary Kieran Shanahan said the dismissal of acting chief Antonio Asion and Sgt. Benjamin Franklin were given dismissal letters Feb. 15 after a an investigation into off-duty work. The letters are not part of the public record. The officers have 15 days from then to appeal the dismissals.

State Highway Patrol Maj. William Grey was named acting chief  on Feb. 3.

Asion joined the agency in August 2012 at an annual salary of $67,839, and became acting chief after the death of Chief W. Scott Hunter in September. Asion had retired in 2004 after 20 years with the Delaware Highway Patrol. Franklin has been a state employee since 1994 and was being paid $45,502 a year.

The State Capitol Police provides security at government buildings in downtown Raleigh and at other state-owned properties.
