RALEIGH – The head of a liberal advocacy group distanced his group from a memo laying out attack tactics against Gov. Pat McCrory and other Republican leaders. Sean Kosofsky, executive director of Blueprint North Carolina, admitted Thursday his group distributed a confidential memo detailing ways to weaken the governor and the Republican leaders in the General Assembly. But Friday, Kosofsky said told the Charlotte Observer the documents may have been distributed in Blueprint NC’s name to bring discredit on the organization.

The plan included talking points, an issues poll and outlined a strategy to weaken and disrupt Republican leaders. Kosofsky said a three-page draft was circulated in December at a meeting of more than 50 progressive groups.

Leslie Winner, executive director of the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation, said she was “surprised and disappointed” by the draft memo. The Observer reports the foundation provided $425,000 in 2012. Blueprint is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit group that is prohibited under federal tax law from engaging in partisan political activity.

The draft strategy memo said progressive should pressure McCrory at every public event and hire private investigators to report on individuals in the McCrory administration.

“If you want to impact the effectiveness of a lawmaker,” Kosofsky told the Observer Thursday, “one way to do that is to find out where they’re weak and use that to your advantage.”
