RALEIGH  - A University of North Carolina sophomore who filed a complaint over the handling of a sexual assault case is now facing Honor Court charges filed against her by the student she claims raped her. Landen Gambill, of Moorseville, is accused of engaging in disruptive or intimidating behavior against another student. If found guilty, expulsion would be the harshest punishment levied.

Gambill told the Raleigh News and Observer that her ex-boyfriend filed the Honor Court charges but accused the university of retaliation for the complaint she filed with the U.S. Department of Civil Rights over the handling of her rape accusation.

However, on Tuesday, the university issued a statement saying it did not file the complaint or encourage the filing of the charges.

Gambill told the N&O that she filed Honor Court Charges against her ex-boyfriend, but he was found not guilty. Honor Court proceedings are typically private.

Gambill also told the The Daily Tar Heel that she did not file a complaint against her boyfriend with any police authority.

However, in January Gambill and two other students, a former student and a former assistant dean of students filed a complaint with the U.S. Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights. The complaint accuses the university of violating the rights of sexual assault victims and of creating a hostile climate that denies victims the right to an education.

Gambill told the paper that ih the charges against her are not dropped, she will demand a public honor court proceeding.
