RALEIGH - University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill officials have been making surprise class inspections to make sure they are taking place and students are in attendance.
The News and Observer reports the inspections are ahead of a planned visit by the university's accrediting agency, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools’ Commission on Colleges. The SACS board could decide this summer whether to sanction UNC for academic fraud scandal that occurred in the university's former African American studies program. The professor heading the program resigned and his assistant also left. The program has been reorganized and placed under new academic leadership.
SACS sent a letter in January to UNC- Chapel Hill Chancellor Holden Thorp, saying the agency wanted documentation academic integrity breaches have been addressed. In response, academic deans have been asked to collect class syllabi and and course requirements.
