RALEIGH - Police found bomb-making materials and maps inside the apartment of the man accused of shooting a state trooper multiple times during a traffic stop in Durham. Mikel Edward Brady II, 23, is accused of shooting trooper in the hands and face Michael L. Potts on Feb. 18 after the officer pulled the Vermont man over for not wearing a seat belt. Potts underwent multiple surgeries, but is expected to fully recover. He was released from Duke Medical Center on Friday.

Brady’s girlfriend, Lyndsey Smith, 21, is accused of giving Brady a ride after he dumped his vehicle at a Durham restaurant. She is charged with being an accessory after the fact of felony.

Investigators searched the couple's Durham apartment in the 1200 block of White Pine Drive near Hillsborough Road on multiple occasions. They seized PVC pipe, salt, a toolbox, nails, a scale, a small black metal tube, metal parts with holes drilled in the corner. They also found a digital camera with pictures marked how to make bombs. In the apartment, a large map of Durham was on Brady's bedroom wall with police, fire and emergency medical services locations clearly marked.

Brady was also serving a federal sentence for theft of explosives and was on two years’ probation with federal authorities at the same time he was serving his state sentence. The federal case involved dynamite stolen from a quarry. Brady attempted to trade the explosives for drugs, authorities reported.

Brady is being held under $10.5 million bond and is a fugitive from Vermont where he skipped parole. Brady has an extensive criminal record in including a federal conviction for stealing explosives.
