RALEIGH, (WPTF) -The U.S. Department of Education civil rights office will investigate charges that UNC-Chapel Hill officials mishandled sexual-assault cases on campus and discriminated against disabled students.

The investigation is in response to a complaint filed by four female students and one former administrator in January. Among the complainants is student Landen Gambill who accused a former boyfriend of raping her. She took her allegations to the student-run Honor Court who found her boyfriend not guilty of the allegations. Gambill did not file a criminal complaint against her boyfriend saying she advised not to do so while her Honor Court case was being pursued.

Gambill is now facing Honor Court charges herself after the former boyfriend alleges she has created an intimidating environment by continuing to allege he raped after the Honor Court ruled otherwise. Gambill has said the charges are retaliation by the university for her public protests and allegations. University officials deny that accusation saying they are ineligible to file Honor Court charges.

The complaint accuses university officials of failing to respond appropriately to sexual harassment and violence and failed to conduct impartial investigations and provide proper grievance procedures.

The university denies the allegations and has hired a consultant on sexual-misconduct cases.

The university learned of the investigation in a letter from the U.S. Department of  Education dated March 1.
