RALEIGH - UNC-Chapel Hill officials are facing a federal investigation regarding the reporting of campus crime.
The Raleigh News and Observer reports the investigation by the U.S. Department of Education’s Clery Act Compliance Division was spawned after a complaint was filed by five women to the department’s Office of Civil Rights concerning the university’s handling of sexual assault cases.
UNC-Chapel Hill officials answered the OCR complaint Thursday.
The Department of Education notified the university it is in violation of several provisions of the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act which requires universities that receive federal funding to maintain and disclose crime statistics.
Federal investigators will visit the campus April 2. Investigators will inspect daily crime logs and crime reports from 2009 to 2012.
Chancellor Holden Thorp said the review was expected and the university will fully cooperate.
