(RALEIGH) -- A Court of Appeals ruling last week struck down a state law that bans convicted sex offenders from using social media where children are members. The law is now back in place, due to a stay granted the State Supreme Court.

Attorney General Roy Cooper says his office requested the stay after the Court of Appeals ruled the law was too broad.

"But our response to that is that the law needs to be broad because technology moves so swiftly. We're hoping that the North Carolina Supreme Court will take another look at this and will reverse the Court of Appeals," Cooper said.

The stay will remain in place while the Attorney General's office files a petition within the next few weeks to have the NC Supreme Court hear the case.
