RALEIGH – As of Saturday, three people remain at a Raleigh hospital after an accident involving The Vortex, a ride at the North Carolina State Fair, Thursday night. Five were taken to the hospital for treatment. One person remains in critical condition.

The accident happened around 9:15 p.m., according to Sheriff Donnie Harrison who briefed reporters. The victims range in age from 14 to 39. One of the victims was a ride operator.

An eyewitness told WTVD that he had just gotten off the fair ride when it started up again. He said he then saw two young victims fall.

Another witness said a boy was knocked unconscious, but was awake when paramedics arrived. He also said a young girl appeared to have a head injury, and the ride operator fell about 20 to 30 feet onto his side.

Harrison is asking those who may have taken cell phone or other video near the ride at the time of the accident to contact the Sheriff's department.
