WINSTON-SALEM -- Voting rights are taking center stage across the Tar Heel state after sweeping changes were made by the Republican-led legislature. A federal judge hearing a case that challenges these laws has decided there will not be a trial until mid-2015. But ACLU of NC Legal Director Chris Brook says they will be allowed a judicial review before the elections next year.

According to Brook, "We're going to have a trial in the summer of 2015 about these changes. But we're also going to have the opportunity to preliminarily enjoin these really radical changes to the way voting is conducted in North Carolina over the summer of 2014."

Brook says they are hoping to avoid cuts to early voting, same-day registration, and the other changes that are set to take affect.
