SHELBY -- Winter weather is wrapping its cold fingers around all parts of the country and North Carolina is no exception. Jordan-Ashley Baker with the North Carolina Department of Transportation says they have already been working to keep roads as drivable as possible in Western North Carolina, where the storm is hitting hardest.

Baker added, "Parts of our coverage area, in the western-mountain area, they started seeing snow as early as 3 and 4 o'clock this [Monday] morning. So it was obviously a very early morning for our crews. They started spreading salt and sand and distributed those along, especially, the primary routes."

A winter storm warning is in effect for some parts of the Tar Heel state and many school systems are operating on a two-hour delay Tuesday morning.
