RALEIGH -- North Carolina ranks near the bottom nationally in teacher pay, and while addressing a bipartisan group of state lawmakers Tuesday at the Holshouser Legislators Retreat in Greensboro, Gov. Pat McCrory said he would like to seek raises for teachers this year and overhaul their pay structure.

McCrory said, "There are going to be three goals, and I don't think any of us can disagree with these goals. The first and foremost is reward our teachers, because they don't feel like they're being rewarded enough. And we already know they've gotten a 1% raise in the last five years."

The two other goals McCrory cited were paying teachers their due respect and to reward teachers based on results. McCrory says more details of the plan will be rolled out in the coming weeks.
