RALEIGH -- April is Autism Awareness Month.Autism is growing rapidly across the U-S and North Carolina. One in 68 children will be diagnosed with autism, including one in 58 within the Tar Heel state.

David Laxton, Director of Communications with the Autism Society of North Carolina, says the disorder is growing in every school district.

"Across the state in every school district there are kids who are identified with autism, and those numbers increase every year. We have actually gone from 3,000 total students with a diagnosis of autism 10 years ago to almost 14,000 students total across the state in that ten year period."

He says in the state's biggest school district, Wake County, children diagnosed with autism has jumped from 482 in the 2002-2003 school year to 2,286 in the 2012-2013 school year.
