CHAPEL HILL -- Federal officials began looking into how sexual assaults were handled on the campus of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill eighteen months ago. On Thursday, UNC Chancellor Carol Folt unveiled a new policy for handling sexual assaults of campus.

Five women asked the US Education's Department of Civil Rights to look into UNC's handling of sexual assaults early last year, and what they called an atmosphere of sexual violence.

Chancellor Folt released a statement announcing the adoption of a comprehensive revision to the university's policy on handling sexual assaults. Folt said the policy, which takes effect immediately, complies with federal regulations and is consistent with the recommendations of the White House Task Force to Protect Students from Sexual Assault and the system-wide UNC Campus Security Initiative.
