RALEIGH -- The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services confirmed the presence of three additional cases of Enterovirus D68, or EV-D68, in North Carolina, totaling nine since September 22, 2014. Dr. Zack Moore with the Division of Public Health says Enterovirus has been around since the 1960's -- in several strains -- but there is much we still don't know about it.
Dr. Moore said, "This particular Enterovirus, D68, has mostly been linked to respiratory illness. And that can be anything from a mild illness, like the common cold, to a more severe illness requiring hospitalization or even intensive care in the hospital."
Health officials are recommending that you wash hands vigorously especially after changing diapers. Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands. Avoid kissing, hugging and sharing cups or eating utensils with people who are sick. Frequently disinfect touched surfaces, such as toys and doorknobs, especially if someone is sick.
