RALEIGH -- An acquisition of some 1,200 acres of land in the Sandhills will benefit a number of species and the growth of the long leaf pine, according to Debbie Crane with the Nature Conservacy.

She says one particular species it will help will be red cockaded woodpecker.

"We need to create ways for one group of woodpeckers to visit with another group of woodpeckers and do a little gene sharing to make everything much more healthier there."

The latest addition will be coupled with the existing Sandhills Game Land .and will be open to the public for hunting, fishing, birdwatching and wildlife-related recreation.  In the Sandhills, The Conservancy has protected some 18,000 acres, much of which is now part of the game land of Carvers Creek State Park..
