RALEIGH -- A winter storm system brought snow, sleet, and freezing rain to North Carolina Tuesday - along with related accidents and power outages. While most of the falling precipitation is now gone, official warn the risk is not.

Governor Pat McCrory told reporters he was thankful most people have stayed off the roads, but he said the danger is far from over.

Governor McCrory said a 19-year-old woman slid off a road in Hertford County early Tuesday and was killed.

"We are very fortunate so far that many drivers heeded our warnings and got off the roads early, but we are nowhere near out of the woods yet," said Governor McCrory.

McCrory issued a state of emergency declaration allows the state to mobilize the necessary resources to deal with the storm and also helps get federal funds to deal with expenses.

The Wake County Board of Commissioners proclaimed a State of Emergency in response to the winter storm.

Freezing rain has caused power outages. Most are reported in Cumberland, Hoke, Moore, and Sampson counties.

Cold weather is expected to persist through the balance of the week, with single digit lows expected for several days later in the week.
