HALIFAX COUNTY - There were no life-threatening injuries as a result of an Amtrak passenger train that collided with a trailer around noon in Halifax County Monday. Highway Patrol Spokesperson Lt. Jeff Gordon says an investigation is underway.

"The trailer was approximately 164 feet in length," Gordon says. "Anytime you have a vehicle that's that length, it's required to get a permit through the Department of Transportation, which they did."

The trailer, which was carrying an electrical building and originated in Johnston Country, fulfilled guidelines as far as time and course with the department.

"There is a designated route that, anytime you have an oversized or overweight vehicle or a vehicle that's unusual length, then they do take certain routes," Gordon says.

The problems began when, as Gordon says, the trailer became stuck trying to cross the tracks.

"The truck was only stuck just a matter of minutes," he says. "As they were trying to maneuver to make that left-hand turn off of N.C. 903 onto U.S. 301, due to the length of the trailer, that was a little more difficult."

The train track's arms then came down and trapped the trailer until the train eventually hit. Injured passengers were taken to a nearby hospital while the rest were taken to Richmond, Virginia by bus.
