RALEIGH -- The Raleigh City Council voted unanimously to approve the $52 million contract to buy the more than 300 acre Dorothea Dix property from the state. Senate Republicans filed a bill to block the deal.

Earlier this week, debate was delayed in a Senate committee. Sponsors of the measure said they're concerned that the price tag is too low. Raleigh Mayor Nancy McFarlane spoke to that effect:

"What they really wanted to see was a fair and equitable deal for both sides at the end, and that's what we accomplished."

The contract is expected to be reviewed by the Council of State at its next meeting, May 5th. That body must review and approve the purchase contract in order for the deal to become final. In the purchase contract agreement, North Carolina will lease back from the City of Raleigh approximately 109 acres for its use.
