RALEIGH -- What began as a facility made out of cardboard boxes is now trying to reduce the overcrowding in the emergency room. One North Carolina hospital has created an idea they hope others will follow.

Mike Lutes from Carolinas Health Care System in Anson County said the idea that came from those boxes transitions patients into a new medical home so they are treated for their long term conditions.

"It's all about community education, but more importantly community engagement. What we want to do is we don't want to dictate how care is provided, what we want is to have community health advisors out talking about how we're trying to improve the health status in Anson County," Lutes said.

With more than 60 percent of ER visits in Anson that did not need to be seen at the ER, this new model could solve the overcrowding problem while still giving people the necessary care, he said.

He said they had to model the concept with a cardboard model because no other health center had anything like it.
