Wake County bus strike

RALEIGH -- Wake County bus drivers took a stand against the school district by essentially walking off the job and refusing to drive their routes Friday, in part because they say Wake County schools cut their hours, lessening their pay. On Friday, some drivers said the recently approved three percent pay raise they were expecting did not show up in their paychecks.

Students in five districts at nearly 70 elementary, middle, and high schools were left stranded. WCPSS spokesperson Heather Lawing told WTVD that the pay raise mishap was technical. "There was a processing error in our payroll system, so less than half of our transportation employees did not receive a three percent pay increase on their paycheck today that they were supposed to get," Lawing said.

Lawing says drivers were not paid at the higher three percent rate for any time they entered before October 10. Any time after October 10, drivers were paid at the additional rate.

WCPSS said it would begin issuing the corrected checks or direct deposits to affected drivers next week.
