(RALEIGH) -- Hundreds of flights have been canceled at major airports in North Carolina as a result of the winter storm, which is impacting a major hub in Charlotte as well as hubs along the Eastern Seaboard. Raleigh-Durham International Airport spokesman Andrew Sawyer says the rash of early cancellations are impacting flights to destinations all over the country.

"The airlines are starting to prefer to remove planes completely from that region instead of having to risk planes getting iced in or snowed in or any of that. That way, they can restart more effectively after the storm passes," Sawyer said.

If you're scheduled to fly out of Raleigh or anywhere else on the Eastern Seaboard in the near future, he added that the best advice, as always, is to check with your airline directly on the status of your specific flight.
