Local Crime Prevention Councils Seek Funding Renewal PDF Print E-mail
Written by Matt Willoughby

(RALEIGH) -- There could be new life for local citizen panels overseeing juvenile crime prevention programs. The General Assembly last year completely cut funding for the Juvenile Crime Prevention Councils pending a review.

Two studies were done on the effectiveness of the councils serving over 20,000 youth. While they needed some tweaking the panels passed the studies. The Governor restored the $23 million but supporters want $5 million more. Mike Rieder with one of the local programs says the whole community is involved. He used a young girl who graduated from college recently as an example. A 6th grade teacher stayed in touch with her and helped buy her supplies through school. The House so far has boosted funding by $1 million and the Senate still has to draft its own proposal.
